Stolen chemicals in Oregon could be used to make meth
PORTLAND, Oregon — Authorities were searching Wednesday for a truck stolen in Southern Oregon that was loaded with 1,700 gallons of a chemical often used by methamphetamine “cooks” to make the illegal drug.
Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger said the flatbed truck with two 1,000-pound tanks was reported stolen Tuesday from Basin Fertilizer & Chemical Co. in Merrill.
The truck was loaded with anhydrous ammonia, a chemical that is used for fertilizing and refrigeration but that also can be used for making methamphetamine, Evinger said.
The mixture is not easily explosive, but when it comes in contact with air, it turns into a gas that can be dangerous if inhaled.
“If the individuals who stole this material are not familiar with the handling of it, they very well could be injured by it,” the Oregon sheriff said.
The FBI in Oregon said the crime did not appear to be related to terrorism and noted that its agents would not be involved in the investigation.
Beth Anne Steele, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Portland, said that usually when fertilizer chemicals are stolen, they are used to make meth. Drug Rehab by County
