Oregon PSU: Pride of a caring community

When Oregon employees know their elderly parents are receiving top-notch care, they experience less anxiety, take fewer absences and are more productive.

When Oregon social workers manage to help youthful offenders become productive members of society, everyone benefits.

Those are just two examples of successful Oregon social work that often goes unnoticed.

Any day of the week, families, children or individuals may find that assistance coming from students and graduates of Portland, Oregon State University's Graduate School of Social Work.

That's because one-third of the graduate student's time is spent in direct community service. In addition, more than 3,000 students have graduated during its 40 years, and 90 percent of them remain in the area to provide services to residents of Oregon and Southwest Washington.

On Friday, the school marks 40 years of working on this model. During that time, the school has worked in partnership with more than 200 local Oregon social service agencies.

This year the school can celebrate its selection to be part of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation program on managing substance abuse, which will bring in $4 million in grants.

The Graduate School of Social Work is a valuable community asset. Our community life is enriched by its success.
